Valentine Peak Endurance Challenge

Parowan, UT

New endurance hike event to showcase beautiful trail.

Beginning in Parowan an approximately 3.5-mile-long trail runs up Valentine Peak and gains nearly 2,000 feet of elevation.  The trail will go down 3.5-miles for a total of approximately 7-miles, and to showcase this trail the VP Endurance Challenge Event has been planned for June 13. The trail has existed in some form for many years, but a great effort has been made to improve it recently.  Much of the credit for the improvements go to Vito Locatelli of Parowan.  The trail begins at the south side of the Iron County Fairgrounds parking lot and hikers are rewarded with beautiful views both at the peak and along the tranquil trail, including the Parowan Valley, Parowan Gap, the Tushar Mountains, rock formations near Valentine's Summit, and Brian Head Peak. Valentine Peak is the red rock bluff to the east of Parowan and can be seen from the entire valley. It was named because on Valentine's Day one can stand at 500 West and Center Street and watch the sun rise directly over the center of the peak. The event is directed by Troy Houston's Blue Dome Timing and will include some great medals, bibs and T-shirts.  It will be capped at 150 particpants and is not timed, but everyone who makes it to the top will get a medal from Locatelli.  Walking sticks are highly recommended as they will provide some rhythum to hikers' paces and add support to a successful hike.  Hikers should also bring water. A good rule of thumb is three to six fluid ounces of water per mile. The trail is not easy and staying hydrated is crucial. The Valentine Peak Trail is on Bureau of Land Management property. Hikers should respect it and what they take in, they need to take out.  Houston said he hopes everyone will "be kind and spread the love while hiking the VP trail."  On June 13, briefing will begin at 8am at the south side of the fairgrounds. Support will end at 2p.m.
